The Art Club’s next external artist event is a Landscape Watercolour Demonstration by Sheena Phillips. The subject for the demo will be Lothian fields and sky. This will be held on Tuesday evening (11th March) between 7.00 and 9.00 pm
Sheena studied furniture design at Edinburgh College of Art before changing to painting and having specialised in watercolour for over 25 years she feels that she has found what she was always meant to paint, the kind of land that she loves and the skies that reflect the land. Her work has been described as ‘atmospheric and evocative’ and often depict the effect of light on water and the land. In her words
“I want to capture the moment of exhilaration, the moment when I see light altering the appearance of the landscape. The moment can be over so quickly, and I want to hold it – nature at its best”
Sheena paints in large brushes on heavy watercolour paper, starting with the sky and the land and finishing with the detail in the studio. The challenge she finds is deciding how long to paint into the watercolour washes before they start to dry.
